*shuffling feet* I am writing Jossverse again and I need a beta or ten. This project has really gotten away with me, with my heart and mind. My time away has provided the opportunity to think through and reevaluate some of my basic interpretations.
While I believe that pastiches are inherently passé and remixes have been done to death, this began as a mashup of a classic source. ( teh deets )
This draft is closing in on 156,000 words. Any additional eyes would be *great*.
HALP.

6:02 pm - [queer] the porn looks back
|
via Jube Today is the tenth anniversary of James Robert Baker's death. Author (of seven novels) and auteur, he hung himself in large part due to the fallout from his last published, anarchoqueer novel, part terror plot and whole love story, Tim+Pete. His work is angry, lyrical, crude and gorgeous; he made art out of pop culture, torquing its usual escapism into directly relevant, glowing emotional truths. If I ever write something half as good as his work, I...won't believe my eyes, but there you go.
From T+P: I wanted to blame it on the mescaline, on the drug's aestheticizing effect, but it reminded me a lot of the way I'd felt the afternoon I'd driven up to Griffith Park during the celibate years and watched three men having extremely unsafe sex in the bushes. That was all I'd planned to do, just watch, to get some fresh material for my mental pornography cache, and I'd been alternately repelled and aroused. The unsafe nature of the sex had appalled and terrified me, but I'd told myself they'd obviously made their own decision about it and would no doubt have been doing the same thing whether I'd been there watching or not. But suddenly the man who was getting fucked in the ass had looked at me--like a porno actor shattering the screen--he'd looked straight at me with utter contempt, as if to say, how dare you cop a cheap, vicarious thrill when we're actually risking (sacrificing?) our lives to do this? If you've read his work, raise your hand? And spare him a thought tonight. And if you haven't, go find it.

8:33 pm - Happy Birthday, Oz & Devon!
|
Ten years ago today, the BtVS episode "Inca Mummy Girl" aired, bringing the world Oz, Devon, and Jonathan.
Celebratory fic: Got Chaos is a BtVS/Teen Titans crossover, starring Bart and Kon tackling the case of a vanished Oz and a transformed Dev. It's lengthy low-rated gen, and some might say it's crack. Enjoy, feel the mellow, and raise a spliff to those three tonight.

3:58 pm - [fic + personal] omg woe
|
My trusty seven-year-old computer gave up the ghost on Monday afternoon. ( *woe* )
Whine, whine, first-world problems. This affects, I guess, really only the fire_fic bidders; I *am* reconstructing outlines and notes and figuring out what to do, I promise.
*
New fic: Slipped Stitch is DCU -- Gotham girlslash, Karon/Zoanne, PG-13. Given how underused both characters are, it might well qualify as original character fic.

3:37 pm - [emo] "absorb and swallow what's being pushed"
|
Bandom has made a lot of people on my flist very happy. I'm all for the happy. I just wish that there were room to disagree without being accused of Cheerio-pissing.
At the end of the day, it comes down to this: Like whatever you like. Please, though, pause for a moment before dismissing others' offense and attacking those who are offended.
Or, you know, don't. But this post is for the latter.
Why might I be offended? ( teal deer )
I don't expect agreement here, nor do I judge the happiness many have found in their new fandom (in other words: saying that I'm offended is *not* the same thing as deeming you, random bandom fan, some soul-crushing homophobe. It's really not). I ask that I be allowed to judge the discourse emanating from that fandom and that, if it is offensive, I have a chance to say why I think so.
Another note: I'm really upset about all this. Commence laughing at me, because this *is* just the Internet, but also understand that if you do reply, I'm not looking for a zero-sum argument on this, just an enlargement of the discursive field. Secondly, it might take me some time to respond to you.
In much longer, but probably more entertaining form: My thoughts on emo, let me show you them.

5:34 pm - [fic] Dick/Tim novella
|
Is that it? Am I done?
Title: From your memory to this instant; Or, Forensics Spoilers/setting: OYL + a year or so. ( more ) Rating: Adult Medium: DC Comics: Gotham Summary: Dick stops fronting and trusts Tim. Maybe that's backwards. Disclaimer: Dick, Tim, and other Gothamites belong to DC; Pete, to J.R. Baker. This is fanfic; don't sue. Notes: Title from Fugazi, "Forensic Scene". Samantha, G., Kate & Jube all held my hand, read scene-drafts, and egged me on throughout the summer. G. brainstormed plot and lyrics with me, pondered birdboy mysteries, and sharpened Jason brilliantly. Jube & Kate shared their dear Pete; they also indefatigably talked music, tinhats, and craft, and never failed to challenge me. And they beta'ed this. I have the best friends in the world; I love them all and can't thank them enough.
Read it here (224Kb).

1:06 pm - bolded, scolded
|
LJBook has overloaded servers right now. I wonder *why*.
God*damn*, I wish I had the moolah for an IJ permanent account before October. /whine
Someone remind me of the autolocking tool for LJs? Sorted, thanks. And while I'm being utterly lazy, a regex or something with which I can change all the feedback links on my archived fics would be *honey*.
If you feel like it, leave me a comment here with your other journals' addresses. I'm all for diasporic fragmentation, but it'd still be cool to know where to find y'all.
I am here, btw.

9:57 am - [fandom] if I could quit you, we'd both be happier
|
In all my linkhopping, I can't remember where I read a snarky comment about how racism discussions always result in people breaking out their "token Black person" icons. So Leila NoName* is now my default; I've been using her often enough that we might as well make it official.
I remain utterly baffled by how (white) USian fans *didn't* know the word in question. Cue clutching of my breast and ranting about history and culture and spitting with disgusted confusion. eta: heyiya most admirably tackles why dictionaries and encyclopedias aren't neutral sources. Me, I'll just keep frothing.
Also, on a more positive note, claiming of prompts for the CoC Fest begins August 4th. If no one claims my Bat-yenta Onyx/Renee (Sept 4) or my Battlestar/Bucky (Sept 19) prompts, I will CRY.
* I reject the 2004 retcon and all its works.

11:24 am - [comics] where have you gone, Mary Marvel?
|
I think there's a lot that I could say about legacy characters' difficult integration into other narrative universes, and gratuitous character arcs where interesting=bartending in the dark, not to mention a feminist observation about power making women into dominatrices. Instead, I'll just offer a couple scans. ( Mary Marvel is my comics girlfriend )
So where's my Mary girlslash, anyway?
